I'll go ahead and cut to the chase, and say that I am writing to you guys looking for money for the Chapter. I am writing to you specifically because you are people that I hope I can count on to lend a hand in this endeavor- either by giving yourself, and/or by touching base with other Brothers you are still close with and asking them to help as well.

I know that most of you got the newsletter that the Chapter sent out last week. I have been in touch with them, and Nationals to get an idea of what kind of situation they are in. In a nutshell- these guys are really trying to get things under control there- but were basically given the short end of the stick by the outgoing class last year.

Just to bring you up to date- Due to some issues on campus 18 months ago- they were not allowed to Rush for a year. They were not able to have Letters on their building. They didn't have a handle on their finances- and were being run by a group of Brothers that do not sound as if they knew which way was up. Their numbers are down to about 15 Brothers. They have been able to participate in Rush this semester, and have 7 pledges pinned. They have been paying the large debt off to Nationals- but with low numbers, they are only keeping their heads above water (the past EC did not pay 1 dime to Nationals in over a year prior to these guys taking over). They have been running some fund raisers (Car Washes, Magazine Sales, etc). Their dues are in line with the other Fraternities on campus- so they are making an effort.

So Far this year- they have incurred a past due balance (carryover from last year) plus new fees totaling 8121.36. I have attached a spread sheet sent to me by Nationals this morning detailing this out. The Chapter has paid 3310 of this debt, leaving them with a Balance of 4811.36. Included in this amount are penalties and service fees totaling 743.36. I have gotten Nationals to agree to waive this amount - if we can get the remainder paid by Mid April. This would leave them with a Balance of $4068.

So, here's what I am asking: Can each of you commit to paying $100 or more directly to the National Office on their Behalf? It is more beneficial to send the money to Nationals because you know what your money is going toward- and you get a statement at the end of the year from them showing the payment- and you can deduct this from your taxes.

Would you let me know how much you can send- or how much you can raise on their behalf (maybe pass this email to some guys that you think you can count on to give)? I am giving $500 towards it today. This will get them to $3568.

To pay- you can put it on your credit card by contacting Carol Arenstein at 317-634-1899 or via email Arenstein@DeltaSig.org You can also mail them a check if you like to 1331 N Delaware St Indianapolis IN 46202-4439. Just make sure to reference our chapter in the correspondence- and send it attention Carol Arenstein. Please keep me posted about anything that you pay-

Let me know what you can do. You know I wouldn't ask if I didn't feel it important.

Thanks,
Kevin Cole

Brothers,

I recently had the opportunity to visit High Point for alumni/family weekend. The changes that the campus has seen is quite amazing and very impressive. Currently there are 27 construction projects going on simultaneously which are all on a very aggressive schedule to be completed by next year. This includes a couple new dorms, a student activity center, a new business school, new field house and track, etc. While walking around campus I could hardly believe that I went to school there, can't even imagine what it will look like next year when we all return to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our chapter.

I also had the chance to speak with some of the active brothers to question some of the rumors I had heard. Fortunately, they were able to combat the rumor that we were definitely going to lose our charter. Unfortunately, they are in need of financial support. Due to a suspension placed upon them by the university they were unable to market themselves (incl. no wearing of letters), were not allowed to host any social functions, and could not take pledges/initiate any new members. As you all know, a lost year can be the demise of a fraternity on a small campus. The group of guys that I spoke with were very ambitious about not losing our charter nor our history. We discussed a couple action items they need to put in place (better communication with alum, naming an alumni advisor) to give them more of the support structure they need.

Currently, due to graduating brothers and two missing pledge classes (fall and spring), our active brother population is not as large as it needs to be. Because of this, the chapter has accrued a debt owed to Nationals of approximately $2500. While this is not a huge amount of money, we need to get this paid in full before nationals pulls our charter. The guys down there have fundraiser after fundraiser lined up, but we all know how much these actually yield, especially with such a small contingent out there. If we can pull together and get this debt paid off for these guys, they have assured me that they will be able to maintain financial control going forward as their numbers grow. Currently, they have a pledge class of seven!

I have attached a letter sent out by the chapter earlier in the week which addresses some of the issues and offers a couple different ways of showing your support. Please either pick up a dozen magazine subscriptions or send a check to them. If everyone on this list sent in a check for $25 we would be able to get rid of this debt once and for all. If everyone on this list sends in $100 we would be able to get rid of this debt and perhaps not have to pay for 50th! Either way, please make this a priority to send in any amount you can as we need to act quickly. Here is the address:

I hate to sign off with something stupid and emotional reminding you of all the great times the fraternity provided and the relationships that you've built from it - so I won't, I'll just tell you that it lies on our shoulders to help keep our charter where it's been since April 7, 1957. Let's make sure it stays there.

Thanks guys - I look forward to seeing you all at 50th!

Dear Alumni Brothers of Delta Zeta,

A fraternity is like a great building. It started from the ground up , with the founding members as the foundation and our beliefs as the corner stone. From then on each member is a brick held together with the common interest of making better men out of ourselves. Together these bricks build a rich history and tradition upwards to excellence. But if the bricks on the bottom crumble the whole building will fall and the fraternity will be in ruins. We the brothers at the top of this building feel as thought we may be starting to fall. We feel that now more then ever that we need to reconnect with our alumni and ensure that our fraternity remains standing.

This is the first of many emails we plan to send. We believe that with your help and support we can bring the greatest and only fraternity on campus back to the top where we belong. We would also like to apologize for not reaching out sooner, before we started slipping downhill. But, its still not too late.

I would like to briefly address some rumors you might have heard. Yes, we are in debt to nationals. No, we are not suspended. And yes, we are low on numbers. So far this semester we have three fundraisers planned and one going on as we speak. We believe that these fundraisers will enable us to become debt free by the end of March. Back in December, nationals contacted us, and the school, informing us that they could suspend us. This news was then brought up by someone outside the fraternity in an IFC meeting. Then the whole campus found out and jumped to their own conclusions. As for numbers, we are very pleased to announce that this semester we gave out seven bids, all accepted.

If you would like to make a donation for our 50th or to one of our many on going fundraisers please make checks payable to Delta Sigma Phi-Delta Zeta and send them to our Treasurer at P.O. Box 9761, 833 Montlieu Ave. High Point NC, 27262. You can also buy a magazine subscription from http://www.magfundraising.com/hpusigs 40% goes to us.

If there is any news you wish to share with us or other alum please let us know and we would be more then happy to publish it.

If you know of any alum that have not received this letter please forward it on to them and ask them to send me their email address.

In addition to this news letter we are also reorganizing our Alumni Control Board. We have already enlisted the help of Alumni Brother Tom Williams. If you live in the High Point area and would like to be apart of our ACB please let us know and we will let you know what it entails.

This past weekend we had a chance to meet a few of our alum. We would especially like to thank Alumni Brother Terrence Donovan for his generous donation. Sir Yay Sir.
